Research Proposals - How RES can help you

Submitting a research proposal can be a daunting task. Which funding body should you apply to?  Which funding scheme best suits your aims?  How do you complete the lengthy and complicated forms?   What costs can be included?  All research applications from Heriot-Watt are submitted via Research & Enterprise Services.  But RES is not simply an applications postbox!  Our specialist staff can help you make the most of your research proposals.

Research Opportunities

We identify research opportunities of interest to HW research groups and email opportunities to individual researchers.  We keep abreast of changes to funding schemes, funding priorities, and regulations to ensure that applicants have the most current information.  The more we know about you and your research interests, the better we can tailor opportunities to suit you.

How to Structure an Application

It’s important that your application be structured in the best way possible.  Consult Linsey Dickson for expert guidance on how to make the most of your application. With 477 proposals in the past year, we understand funders’ needs.
We can, where appropriate, provide feedback on your application.  Was it clear enough?  Did it meet the funder’s requirements?  How does it read?  Would the assessor, who may not be expert in your discipline, understand the application?

How to Cost an Application

The finances of a research application can be time-consuming and confusing.  What are “eligible” or “ineligible” costs, what can be included and what will funders support?
RES can help you!  We’ve developed a bespoke costing tool, Research Proposal Costing (RPC).  Simply input your data and it will produce a full economic cost (FEC) and a price appropriate to the funder.

The Application Process

All applications, large and small, must be submitted via RES, in line with the University’s guidelines and procedures.  This ensures that your proposal conforms to the funder’s guidelines and requirements - a good idea should not be let down by minor errors.  We also ensure that finances are correct, that any ethical issues have been given appropriate consideration and any legal or IP issues have been identified and dealt with.  With RES authorisation your research project will also be covered by the University insurance.

Your Next Step
