Technology Transfer: Supporting Heriot-Watt Inventors & Researchers
Discoveries made during the course of your research may have exciting commercial potential. The Business Development & Technology Transfer Team at RES is here to work with you, the inventor, to define and assess your invention's commercial potential and to assist you in developing and making the most of your inventions and ideas.
Technology Transfer - taking knowledge from within the university and disseminating it in the wider environment - can make a real difference on many levels. Your invention, taken up and commercialised by a business or your own spin-out company, can improve the quality of life of end users and have a positive economic impact, nationally and internationally. Your knowledge and expertise can make a difference to industry and the general public, enhancing engagement with, and understanding of, the University's work and mission.
The Technology Transfer team works with inventors to define inventions, evaluate commercial potential and assist in protecting and exploiting the innovation.
Our services include:
- Advise on all aspects of commercialisation. This includes evaluating the opportunity, undertaking initial market research and addressing Intellectual Property issues.
- Support in obtaining funding for further development of the invention towards commercialisation from commercially-oriented sources (including Proof of Concept awards, Research Council Follow on Funds, ITI funding and development funding by potential licensees).
- Business Development - including identifying and contacting research partners to promote your research activities etc.
- Licensing of HWU inventions to external companies.
