Legal & Intellectual Property Services at RES

To ensure that the interests of the University and it's staff are protected in technology transfer and the conduct of research, RES will give advice on legal matters. This includes ensuring compliance with University policies and legal/financial regulations, as well as the preparation and negotiation of contracts and agreements. The legal team also deals with all aspects of Intellectual Property (IP); this includes IP protection (patents, designs, trademarks, copyright and confidentiality) and the commercialisation of IP.

  • Research Contracts – studentships, collaborations, funding contracts
  • Consultancy – quotations, consultancy contracts
  • Teaching Collaborations & Approved Learning Partner (ALP) Agreements
  • Spinout Companies – incorporation documents, secondments, hire of facilities
  • University Subsidiaries – board meetings, AGMs, intercompany agreements

Jade Ross

  • Intellectual Property – due diligence on IP, IP Policy, advice on copyright
  • Licensing – software licences, technology licences, copyright licences
  • Student IP – advising on IP Policy, Assignation of Student IP
  • Patent Administration – liaison with patent agents, recovery of patent costs, IP database
  • EU Consortium Agreements – FP7 and other European research programmes
  • Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs)

Costanza Di Fant

  • Converge Activities – industrial engagement, industry funded research
  • Converge Challenge – terms and conditions, related legal documents
  • Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Agreements
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD)/Short courses – quotations, CPD contracts
  • Confidentiality Agreements / Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs)

We have not attempted to cover every single type of contract in the list. Please consider the nature of the work being carried out, eg a collaboration for a research project, or PhD Studentship is likely to be a “research contract”, but a FP7 consortium agreement is a “EU Consortium Agreement”.
